Explaining the science behind Stand-up comedy

No one will ever doubt that comedy is an art and a very basic form of entertainment that has existed in the lives of humans since an early age. Comedy is further divided into many different genres with stand up comedy being the most famous and thus prominent one.

As strange it may sound, stand up comedy is also a form of science, along with art. Now hks may seem off track and the readers may find absolutely no similarities between the two fields obviously. However as you read on, you will realize that stand up comedy is also scientific.

I would like to clarify in the beginning that the science involved in stand up comedy is nothing like the science we study in books. This science is not related to physics or chemistry but rather with the science of behaviors of the audience. A stand up comedian measures the laughter that he/she gets in response to their satire.

Researches have proved that 93% of verbal (oral) communication has no relevance to the words actually used in a communication. The 93% includes 38% voice infection and tone changes and 55% body language/facial expressions.

So the delivery of jokes by the comedian has an impact on the audience. The non verbal communication between the audience and the comedian form a communication bridge and the effectiveness of the words of the comedian increases. The body language of the comedian and how he/she delivers the content matters more than the content itself.

Secondly, while a stand upcomedian is performing two phenomenas are taking place side by side. One, the comedian is delivering his content in a specific manner and two, the audience are interpreting the comical content and responding to it. Now in this
The time that a comedian has performed on stage is measurable. The amount of accumulated laughter a comedian received during a performance is measurable.

Now we can scientifically calculate the quality of the comedian's performance while on the stage. This can be done by taking a ratio of the laughter time that a comedian generated on stage in seconds, divided by the length of the comedians performance in seconds.

So it can be easily proven that stand up comedy is not just an art or an entertainment source but also a science which can be used effectively to study about the behavioral trends of people under varying comical subjects and circumstances.
